Build a House in One Week

Huf Haus in Thames Ditton

This is a very intriguing segment on Discovery Channel's show "How Do They Do It?" I just saw this morning.  It showed how a German company made it possible to build a very decent home in just one week.

Prefabricated housing and the method of prefabrication in construction is not new to me but it always fascinates me every time I see how manufacturer's actually build the prefabricated parts and the actual process of constructing them.  The HUF HAUS company, based in Germany, is a design and construction company and one of the leaders in prefabricated wood construction in Europe.  They were shown in Discovery Channel's show "How Do They Do It?" which showed how they prepared the prefabricated parts and assembled them into one beautiful house.

It all starts with getting the architectural plans finished for the house and then it's off to the factory for the building of the prefabricated parts.

The factory scene was amazing which showed the actual preparation and the building of the prefabricated wooden parts.  Large pieces of wood and timber are cut down to size according to the architectural plans using computerized machinery which if can remember it right, is accurate to 1/10th of a millimeter, which no human can ever equal.  Every piece is carefully checked for quality and every hole, patched.

The windows for the house are also manufactured in their factory.  The windows can be double glazed, triple glazed, and as said in the show, if you're not friends with your neighbors, you can even have the glass bullet proofed.

The walls of the house are also constructed with the utilities and services infused inside like the conduits and raceways for the electricity, heating and ventilation,  and the plumbing.

After the prefabrications are done, they deliver them on site and they start assembling the pieces together.  The house was assembled starting from the bottom up.  Since the parts were precisely cut, they slid down every hole and connections quite easily. The construction only lasted for one week where the new owners of the house can now live in and start filling it up with interior furnitures and their clutter.

The picture on top is one of the examples of the works of HUF HAUS.  If you want to see more of their works, you can visit their official site.
