This is a €41.5M international competition winner designed by LIN. It is a new institution for communication, research and education in design opened on the 1st of October 2009.
The project involves the renovation of several historic buildings on the site of the National Arms Manufacture in St. Etienne, France and the integration of a new 200x32m (656x104ft) building - the "platine", a 31m high (101ft) observation tower, two gardens and a public esplanade - the Place d'Armes.
Also called the "Centre International du Design", the project's main piece, "the platine", has an adaptive skin that envelopes exhibition spaces, an auditorium - the "agora", a greenhouse and media and material library. Its main structural elements consisting mainly of complex steel framing that forms the walls and roof of the structure is stable enough to take away the need of adding any support on the interior that may get in the way of the activities inside.
The center is also energy efficient and utilizes heat exchange and recovery system to reduce energy used for heating. The skin of the building consists of 14,000 equilateral triangles of different materials which controls the light, heat, and air flow inside the structure. Some of this triangles are photovoltaic cells that can generate power inside the building.
Below are additional images of the exterior, interior and other details of the center.
