3ds Max Tutorials #27: Creating Realistic Grass

grass-tutorial-01.jpgI was one of those many people looking for a good solution to creating realistic grass in 3dsmax and, most likely, you are too.

I want to share this 3dsmax tutorial I found on the net by Peter Guthrie

Basically, the method used is no longer the texture type method where in you mimic the look and feel of the grass by just adding a nice grassy texture onto a flat plane.  Those times are gone and we need a much better solution to create a more realistic scene.

Peter's method is real simple if you think about it and it starts out with modeling out grass blades of different sizes and grouping them into one module.

And then after creating one module and collapsing all this into one object, you then proceed into scattering and randomizing these modules onto a plane object or where you plan to place the grass objects.  Peter used vrayscatter on his works but you can also use other scattering methods and scripts like 3dsmax's native scatter or the advanced painter script.  Basically what you need to accomplish is to scatter the modules without making any tiling patterned look on the target plane.

And there you go, you now have a much more realistic looking grass on your rendering.  If you're using vray, it would also be helpful if you import the grass object to vray proxy to save on memory and not slow down your pc.
