This is the External Refrigerator and is one of the eight finalists in the Electrolux Designlab 2010 competition. The competition focuses on the living conditions of people in the year 2050, when it is predicted that a greater population would be living in compact spaces in an urban environment setting. The winner would be announced by the 23rd of September 2010.

Inspired by how the people from Northern China stores food outside their residential houses to use the cold exterior air to preserve their food, designer Nicolas Hubert from France designed this External Refrigerator using the same principles. Attached to the exterior of the building, it will maximize the use of the exterior air during cold nights and the cold season to cool the food inside. Then during the summer time and warmer days, it will convert the sun's rays through solar panels into energy to mechanically cool the food instead. Because it's attached on the external skin of the building, it would save space in the interior. And because of its simple shape and a wide range of colors, it easily adapts to any external urban environment.
