"The Snail" is one of the eight finalists in the Electrolux Designlab 2010 competition. The competition focuses on the living conditions of people in the year 2050, when it is predicted that a greater population would be living in compact spaces in an urban environment setting. The winner would be announced by the 23rd of September 2010.

The Snail, designed by Peter Alwin from India, is a portable heating device that can be attached to any surface. It heats up the surface through a magnetic induction process. Its size is very handy that it can be attached to a wide range of cooking containers and kitchen wares such as pots, pans, coffee mugs and the like thus eliminating the need for additional cooking wares which saves more space.

It is powered by a high density sugar crystal battery which the snail converts into energy to heat up the coil necessary for the magnetic induction process to take place. Sensors are integrated on the device that detects the food inside the container it then automatically adjusts the right temperature and the heating time that it needs to cook or heat the food. A touch sensitive display with manual interface is also integrated to have a much more control over the whole cooking process.
